Embarrasing Songs That Get Stuck In My Head #12

When Lionel and Shania (Shanionel, the musical matchup the world has been waiting on for years) come together for this endlessly cheesy remake, it can't help but stick in your head a little bit.

I have to say, this duet works better than it sounds like it would.

Quest So Hard

This is getting me more pumped up for The Hobbit than the Hobbit trailer did.

Behold the Bacon Shake

From Get the State Off My Plate:: I thought the bacon craze had died down temporarily (like rock n' roll, bacon will go up and down in popularity but never die). But Jack In ...

A Swanson Dinner (and Dessert)

Over at our sister site, Get The State Off My Plate, the most-read post of the year was "Swanson Meals," regarding the dietary choices of the man's-man character Ron Swanson from the sitcom Parks and Recreation. As you can see below, a graphic artist named Jon Defreest has had a lot of fun with the Ron-Swanson-meets-Swanson-Meals concept ...

... And don't forget the dessert!

We Go Together Like … What?!

As someone who writes ads and e-blasts for a living, I inspect them more closely than the average bear. I got an e-blast recently from Muzak (the company that produces on-hold messages, retail sound systems, and of course, elevator music) that make me do a double take.

The e-blast starts off with:

Some things are meant to be together.
   Fried pickles and ranch dressing.
   Football and Sunday afternoon.
   Music and Messaging.

Now imagine the number of people who have ever had fried pickles. Probably not that many (it sounds like a regional delicacy; I think they serve them at Dave's Famous BBQ). Now imagine how many of those eat fried pickles on a regular basis. Probably not that many. And then, out of those fried-pickle-eating folks, how many usually pair them with creamy ranch? We're talking about a small number, but not as tiny as the number of people who would put the combination of fried pickles and ranch above Sundays and football.

Break out the Hidden Valley Ranch!
Huh? Who wrote that? Who edited that? Usually in marketing, you try to reach out to as many people as possible, unless you're chasing a very specific niche. If this is a regional specialty, why is it in an e-blast that’s distributed throughout the country? Peanut butter and jelly is obviously more like football and Sundays in more people's minds. I give Muzak some credit for not picking the most obvious reference, but this one is just too bizarre.

I've never had a fried pickle, it may well be very delicious with ranch (ranch pretty much goes with anything not sweet). Personally, I think pickles cry out to be paired with mustard, but you might expect that guy with a blog called Fancy Mustard.

A Clear Sign That the Food-Truck Craze Has Gone Too Mainstream

Sizzler is going into the food-truck biz. Here's the menu:

The food will probably be pretty good. (I haven't eaten at a Sizzler in almost a decade.) But food trucks are supposed to be cool, and Sizzler is about as uncool as a restaurant can be. That's probably why they're trying to be stealthy with the "zz" brand name.

I Went to The County Fair, The Chocolate & Bacon Were There

So I was at the L.A. County Fair and I decided to try some chocolate-covered bacon. It's one of those things you do at the fair in between pig races and petting zoos. I discovered that it feels weird to stand at the counter and order chocolate-covered bacon, even when it's on the menu. But order I did and I got six pieces of bacon served cold in a little Chinese takeout box.

It was a good snack but not as great as it sounds. It's basically salty chocolate with a chewy middle and hints of bacon flavor peeking out from under the chocolate. It makes you realize that a lot of the pleasure of eating bacon comes from its crunchiness. If you had some hot fresh bacon and dipped it in a chocolate fondue, that would be a better way to appreciate the bacon and chocolate more equally. But It's hard to do that at a fair.

In hindsight, I kind of wish I'd tried a donut-and-fried-chicken sandwich instead.
